Spinal Tap
Sculptural installation, print on sheet metal, truss structure
6 x 6 x 6m, 2023, National Library Singapore
Commissioned for the National Library Singapore (NLB), Spinal Tap, is a large scale mixed media installation presented during Singapore Night Festival (SNF) 2023. In Spinal Tap, the book spine is imagined as a portal which readers enter to immerse in literary worlds, seeking wisdom and fantasy anew. Paralleling to the spinal system of vertebrates, both serve as vessels of information and literal foundation for acquiring knowledge. The installation presents two humanoid silhouettes, engaged in silent reading, forming a written tapestry, woven with circulating ideas. Vein-like ropes embrace the silhouettes, imbibing them with potentiality, evoking notions of evolution and intelligence through the simple act of reading—a deeply human way of learning, filled with untapped potential for so much more.

Notochord

The notochord is the name of a cartilaginous rod that develops into a vertebral column within vertebrates. This eventual development defines vertebrates and invertebrates- a crossroads in evolution, defining the path in which the organism takes. Notochord presents a speculative evolutionary relationship with the screen, to self-images. A nod to the incisive nature of advertisements, unlikely elements are presented as screens, for display, on display.

Hallucigenia

3D print &#38;amp; foam composite, aluminium profiles, Raspberry Pi with LCD screens, 02:27/02:03mins video loop, 2021

Hallucigenia presents as metaphorical notions of bodily entrapment. From fossils, embedded images, to nightmare loops, the act of entrapment is woven into a narrative throughout the artwork, and the momentum for stilted terror.

Resigning Mass centres itself around a script compiled from conversational scenes found within various movies, forming a collaged conversation between two parties. This script becomes the material in which the project’s characters are literally and metaphorically shaped from, in their forms and lives.
A script composed from conversations within multiple movies forms the premise of Resigning Mass. These mundane conversational scenes are collaged together to form a new conversation between two parties, covering topics ranging from life routines to sinning. This script becomes the commandment that shapes every aspect of Resigning Mass’s characters. Images are extracted from the same movie scenes and converted into 3D models, which are used to shape the character’s bodies. These scenes are skinned across their surfaces, a reminder of their origins. In animated videos, the character’s move in an erratic, spastic manner, as the same script is converted into data that drives their movements.

Narrative force essentially becomes literal, governing all aspects in which the character’s are presented. The characters have been ’pre-scripted’- they are forced to embody content written by others, both conceptually and formally. They are puppets stringed along literary lines, with no control over the paths they take. Their twitchy movements exacerbates feelings of uncontrollability and tension. The visual language of vinyl toys in their presentations further these qualities- they are packaged and circulated in an exacting manner, their cartoon hands and feet espousing their status as caricatures, simplifications.
A sense of loss pervades- a resignation of fate, present in the title of the show. As an aberration of the term ‘mass resignation’, which connotes departure, a seemingly collective choice to leave, Resigning Mass takes an opposing tone, of an individual giving into the path laid out, having been exhausted, overcomed; bringing to mind questions of fatalism and predeterminism. These qualities seem to reflect the manner in which media is produced, consumed, and how they shape the way in which we perceive our lives. Stories of destiny, succumbing to or freeing oneself from its binds; Of staged realities, real/reel lives- wills toyed by powers beyond and unknown.

		<description>
HollowingHollowing is a project consisting of 3 video works examining the human body as a hollowed vessel in mass media. Through videomoshing, pixels becomes the form’s skins, intermixing personas and associations.

Beginning with Hollowing (2018), the project has been extended with Hollowing, Conversation (2019).&#38;nbsp; In the ensuing piece Hollowing, Generation (2019), the previous video works are converted into animation data that drives the movements in the artwork.

Tristan Lim’s practice presents critical explorations into structures of perception, significance and desire in visual culture. Deeply interested in how the historic and speculative continuously reinvents and assert themselves in present life, his work engages with the porous nature of lived reality, resulting in open-ended narrative structures expressed through drawing, mixed media installations and procedural digital works.
His works has been featured at Ota Fine Arts, The Arts House, and Singapore Art Museum at 8Q. He has participated in the Facebook (Meta) Artist-in-residence (AIR) programme, and presented work in Singapore Night Festival, Singapore Light to Night festival, ART SG, and overseas in Spain, Vietnam and Taiwan.&#38;nbsp;

Most recently, he is a recipient of the inaugural NAC-UAS Arts Scholarship in 2025.
He currently teaches Visual Media in Lasalle College of the Arts, Singapore.

		<description>

Did he know it was your birthday?

He's the director. He's kind of busy.
He ate a piece of my birthday cakeand he got me a present.

Yeah, I think he knew.

Well, what did he get you?

He made me a tape.

Wanting people to listen, you can't just...

tap them on the shoulder anymore. You have to hit them with a sledgehammer.

And then you'll notice you've got their strict attention.

You know how many peoplel've tried this with?

l don't wanna know.

You'll be happy to knowout of the hundreds...

-Hundreds?-...you are still the only one.-l'm not doing it.-Yes, you are.

-The car's moving too much.

I know, baby. You'd dig it the most.

- But you know what the funniest thingabout Europe is? - What?

It's the little differences. I mean, theygot the same shit over there that they got here,

- but it's just there,it's a little different.- Example.

You took my bargaining power, You used it against me.

You would have done it again.Just admit it.

I get a bad taste in my mouth out here.

Aluminum, ash.

Like you can smell the psychosphere.

"'We don't gotta do nothing.

"'Just cuddle, sleep next to each other, wake up in the morning together.'

No, you're gonna leave, but I'll see you tomorrow."

- You see that, young lady? Respect.

- Respect for one's eldersshows character. - I have character.

- Because you are a character doesn'tmean that you have character.

It's the first questionthat popped into my head.

I guess the same reasons as you,

or the same reasons you hadbefore you decided to quit yea?

You just met me.

Maybe I'm not understandingthe question.

It's very simple.

What'd you do on your birthday?

Nothing.

Come on.You must've done something.

No. Same as every other day.

Woke up, felt like shit, went to work, felt like shit.

That's called a hangover, amigo.

At least with a hangover,l feel something.

This must have beenwhat all those people felt like

before I filed themas statistics in my reports.Goddamn!

We've just had a near-life experience!

Seems real personal.

I don't think so.

It was iconic, planned.

And in some ways, it was impersonal.

Think of the blindfold.

This place is like somebody's memoryof the town, and the memory's fading.

l was only curiousto know how it started.

Now l know.

Feelings can creep up just like that.

l thought l was in control.

-I'm standing here. You make the move.

-You make the move.

- It's your move.

-I'm disciplined and organized.

-I use habit and routineto make my life possible.

-Sammy had no drive,no reason to make it work.

-Me? Yeah, I got a reason.

-establish a timeline,

-and build a story day after day.

-So, you're gonna go out thereand you're gonna say, "Good night.

-I've had a very lovely evening."

-It's me.

-If there's an extra ticket...

-would you go with me?

-You dummy.-You're pathetic,and you're a sinner.

-You're a filthy dumb sinner,

-and now you getwhat you deserve!
